It’s that time of year and you’ve probably noticed that Stick in the Wheel are appearing at the top of every ‘Best Folk Album of 2018’ list out there and rightly so!

Stick in the Wheel Podcast

We chatted to Nicola, Ian and Ellie from Stick in The Wheel, before their Mill Race Folk performance at Bedford Esquires on the 31st March 2018. They chose to play Marrabones, a traditional song about an unhappy marriage with an unfortunate ending!

We talked about the Clancy brothers in their fisherman’s jumpers (check out the video we discussed in the podcast), removing the diddly choruses, plotting a murder and very mild swearing. Other artists who were mentioned were Peter Bellamy and his catalogue of music on Spotify, Planxty and Martin Carthy’s version of ‘Stitch in Time’, a Mike Waterson song.

Stick In The Wheel have just released their second album Follow Them True and are currently touring, so go and see them!

Stick In the Wheel At Bedford Esquires

On Saturday 31st March, Stick in the Wheel did a show at Bedford Esquires. It was a fierce performance to a rapacious Mill Race Folk crowd. Stick don’t do genteel folk music and Esquires is your typical black box rock venue that the locals have a lot of affection for. In-between songs, a curious deafening noise by a band from the bar on the ground floor caused some interruption, but Stick handled it well with their usual acid wit.

Known for Kearey’s fierce, authentic delivery, this is culturally & politically switched on folk with roots embedded in working-class heritage. Their 2nd album ‘Follow Them True’ is released on 26 January 2018. They examine rituals & cycles, our inherent power to change ourselves & the world around us, the past repeating itself, ghosts & death, land & place, thieves & beggars.

Stick in the Wheel have been one of the most popular acts we’ve had a Mill Race Folk. They’re coming back to play at Bedford Esquires on Saturday 31st March 2018. Tickets are just £12 and are on sale now from eventbrite (they are already selling fast!). Get there early to see us play a set as support!

Here’s a video from the most recent Mill Race Folk event at The Place Theatre with Stick in the Wheel. Thanks to Yonder Hedge for the footage and for the audience for singing along! The Place is a lovely venue with brilliant people. Davy spends a lot of time dressing the stage to make it cosy. Our next show there is with Daoíri Farrell on Tuesday 4th April. From Here: English Folk Field Recordings

A few months back Nic & Ian from Stick in the Wheel journeyed over to our little terrace house in Bedford to record Jack singing and playing in our kitchen. They’ve been going around the country doing folk field recordings: Capturing the folk performer raw at home in just a take or two with no studio frills or pesky overdubs! The result is From Here: English Folk Field Recordings – a set of immediate and intimate recordings by contemporary folk singers doing traditional songs that mean something to them, due to be released on 17th March 2017. It features folk establishment figures like Jon Boden, Lisa Knapp, Martin and Eliza Carthy, and one of our very own- Mr Jack Sharp singing Bedfordshire May Carol (track 1!). Well done guys on a fabulous album. We love it x
